Know the Signs of Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body makes little or no insulin. It can be diagnosed at any age, and there is no cure. People living with type 1 diabetes need insulin every day to survive.

Symptoms can develop quickly and may include:

●      Extreme thirst

●      Frequent urination, including new bedwetting in children

●      Unexplained weight loss

●      Fatigue

●      Irritability

●      Blurred vision

●      Fruity-smelling breath

Early diagnosis is critical. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention promptly. Fruity-smelling breath, vomiting, difficulty breathing, or other severe symptoms can be signs of a medical emergency and require immediate care.

Managing type 1 diabetes requires ongoing attention to blood sugar levels, insulin, food, physical activity, and other factors. Insulin may be delivered through injections or an insulin pump, and many people use continuous glucose monitors to help track their blood sugar.

About World Diabetes Day

Observed annually on November 14, World Diabetes Day brings global attention to diabetes and its impact on individuals, families, and communities. It is celebrated on November 14th because it marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin, whose discovery transformed the lives of millions living with diabetes.
